ATAK Case Studies

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Control
ATAK
TAK Server

VATN Systems builds affordable autonomous underwater vehicles that act in cooperative swarms, enabling a multitude of new use cases. At the core of VATN’s R&D efforts is advanced navigation software that is effective in GPS, vision, and communication compromised environments.

VATN Systems partnered with DS2 under a professional services contract to develop an Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) End User Device (EUD) capability that enables autonomous operation and navigation of a submersible through a handheld Android device.

Serving as subject matter experts, DS2 collaborated directly with a VATN systems engineer to design and build the core ATAK plugin functionality. Our team established the foundational communications between the ATAK EUD and the submersible, including integration with ROS2 to support autonomous control and data exchange. Throughout the engagement, DS2 delivered key features, resolved technical challenges, and supported multiple successful test events alongside the VATN team.

Services Provided:

  • Development of a user interface for command and control of the submersible
  • Communication pathways using Cursor on Target (CoT) for managing multiple submersibles
  • SME support and guidance for ATAK plugin development
  • Integration with ROS2 for autonomous control and system communication
  • Release support through the TAK Product Center and TAK repositories
